Great Expectations
In the novel Great Expectations, Pip is full of "expectations" for his future. What expectations do you have for your future? Who are some people around you that have expectations of you? What are those expectations?
One of my expectations for the future is to get into a band better than concert band next year. Many people expect things of me. For example, Mrs. Hennessy expects me to do this assignment, and probably also expects me to overdo the comments.
I have an expectation to go to college and work as a forensic scientist in a FBI lab. Also, I expect to always keep my grades up and not slack off. Some people around me that expect a lot from me are my parents and my teachers. From my teachers they always expect me to turn my homework in and my parents expect me to keep my grades in "tip-top" shape. My dad also expects me to go to college and get into the Air Force.
One of my expectations for the future is to get into a division 1 college and play baseball there. After college I would like to be drafted into the majors. If that doesnt work out I would like to follow in my mothers footsteps and become a sports phsycologist. Alot of people expect things of me. My parents expect me to get great grades even though I am one of the youngest in my grade. (I have just turned 14.)They also expect me to be respectful and act in the way that they have raised me to act.
Oh and Mrs. Hennessy didnt you say we were going to blog on a different website? Just wondering. Oh and also Lebron plays on Sunday, i hope he dunks on Kobe.
I did say we were going to try a different site. You were not there on Friday when I explained that I had some difficulty with the other site, so we are staying here for the time being! Because people in your lives have set high expectations for you, do you think that is a motivator for you?
One of the greatest motivators for a person is expectations. In general, people want to avoid disappointing those who believe in them. Therefore, I believe it is important to set goals high so that your chances of success are increased.
I am reminded of the poster on the wall of the classroom that says, "Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss you'll land among the stars." I think that statement has a great deal of truth and I have also noticed that those who do well in life generally expect themselves to be successful.
I usually set goals that I know I probably cannot meet. For instance last year I wanted to get a perfect score on one of my writing pieces, the only problem was that I knew my teacher never gave out one-hundreds on our projects because then we would have nothing to aim for the next time. Even though I never achieved my goal, my writing dramatically improved as did my grade in the class.
Even though at the time I didn't appreciate what she was trying to do for us, I now see the benefits of this style of teaching, especially since it motivated me to spend time on my projects, instead of waiting until the last minute and throwing them together as usual. It also prompted me to revise my writing several times and as revision is the key to learning to write, I probably learned the most during those two years than I had for the previous nine.
Right now I have expectations for myself both long-term and short-term. Even though I know it is impossible I expect myself to ace my tests so I will study, and I have noticed that if I believe I will get a perfect on a test, I do better than if I just expect myself to do well. Having an ideal to work from helps. I also expect myself to graduate from college because that way I know that I cannot stop working after I graduate high school and that I need to continue to work all through college.
Sometimes, it is difficult to set expectations for the future. It is really hard to tell yourself that you need to get better grades, because you tend to become defensive, blaming teachers and other students for your bad grades. In these instances, it helps to have teachers, parents, and other adults you respect to outline their expectations so that you achieve more than you would by yourself.
My parents and teachers have always expected me to do well in school, and I have always tried to meet these expectations, even when it becomes stressful. I know my parents expect me to go to college and take challenging classes, and I always strive to achieve their expectations, but I don't just do what they expect me to do. I believe my future is mine not theirs and that I need to do well for myself and not for them. I also try to shape their expectations into my own because I know that even though some of their expectations seem a bit strange right now, they will probably make sense later on.
Now I realize that many people will argue that setting unachievable goals lowers self-esteem and can cause depression. In fact some of you were probably already formulating your response while you were reading this. While this argument is definitely valid, I think it truly depends on the type of person. I know I have a type A personality and if I didn't set high goals, I wouldn't see the purpose in doing well.
I know that many people are waiting until Sunday to post so responding to other people's posts could be a problem... sorry this post is so long but I'm hopeful someone will find some parts to comment on so we can begin some discussion because so far there isn't a whole lot to work with for responses.
Do I have great expectations? Nah, then that would make my life sound like that awful book. Actually, I seem to be one of the few people who actually enjoys reading Mr.Dickens work of "Great Expectations" because of one aspect of it most people hate it for, its excessive attention to detail. For a fair fraction of my life, I have been reading great fictional stoies that describe everything with intense detail, making the reading slower, but creating a more extensive visual image in your head.
Well, anyway, I have awesome expectations for my future. They're so awesome that I don't even know what they are! Oh, wait, spontaneously some ideas of expectations popped into my head. If you've got a pipe, you may want to light it and sit back for a good long smoke, listening to my expectations.
Ahhhhhhhh... wait a sec while I crack all of my hands, neck, and legs. Oh yeah, now I feel as good as a paralyzed person.
Okay, I have a few expectations as stated earlier. Some expectations that I have for my early future are, like mary kate's, to achieve a seat in a higher ranked band class for next year, and to go through marching and pep bands all four years of high school.
A little bit further into my future, I hope to attend Ohio state university. To do this, I hope to earn the Evans Scholarship, which would give me a full ride to either Miami University or OSU. I'm goin' for it! Then I would like to go into classes for maths and sciences. What I plan to have as a career, I'm not sure yet, but I'd like to have a good one.
Even further into my future I have expectations of myself to be able to write a book when I am in a comfortable position in life, and get it published. I may make a few bucks or not, but it doesn't matter to me much. I also have expectations of having a happy family.
Ah, Corinn, how smart you are. That was a very good observation that I might be "formulating a response as reading", but it was wrong upon what I may comment. I'm not saying that unachievable goals are depressing, they just aren't possible. You can't aim for something that doesn't exist. It's like shooting black Michael Jackson, that guy doesn't exist! Now there's a white Michael Jackson, who is an absolute shame to what black Mike used to be. This guy just sucks! But anyway, it's not possible to aim for that, so instead I would aim for the 98% or 99% on those papers.
Oh, and whoever came up with the whole "shoot for the moon" thing, didn't you ever stop to think about the moon's feelings?! You're all so mean! Meanies! Okay, that was kinda girlish wasn't it... I'm gonna go now. By the way this is Jacob, signing off.
P.S.- Corinn, now you have a discussion! Oh! Come on, respond! I dare ya!
P.S.S.#1- Double dog dare ya!
P.S.S.#2- Oh, now it's on! I triple dog dare ya!
P.S.S.#3- That includes you Mrs.H! Get in the conversation! I'll bet Andy will either completely forget about this or barely remember it on Sunday night.
Okay, Let's clear up some things! There are some great, insightful points being made here! First, Corinn, thank you for your essay on expectations! I agree that expectations are a huge motivator. It is why educators talk about setting the bar high for students. You gave your peers several points to ponder. Jacob, unless your picture relates to the point at hand, let's not post pictures in our blog as I foresee issues arising from that!
Also....the picture comment was not meant just for Jacob, but for all of you. I am hesitant to allow you to post pictures of yourselves and I can see how this might get out of hand. We will discuss this more in class on Monday...
Wow! Jacob and Corinn, you guys are so detailed. Both of you really know how to expand such a simple subject into a complex situation. I find it very amusing!
Corinn, your ideas on expectations are definelty something to think about and very thoughtful, don't ever change! You're detailed plan of your life and theory on expectations was definelty "food for thought".
Jacob, you're very funny, but you also know what you want to do in your future. It's nice that you want to continue schooling, publish a book, and then settle down. I don't know if I could ever stop working and raise a family. I mean I want to, but the work I want to do will be so exciting!
And Mrs.H the Air Force is something my dad wants me to do because he is in the military, but he leaves us so much that I don't know if I could do that to my family. My expectations of having a family is to spend as much time with them as possible and make work a lower priority.
Some expectations I have for myself is to go into the medicial field. forensic to be exact. I find the human body very interesting. I will be working really hard at going to do that.
Most people have expectations for everyone, so, people must have expectations for me. An example being, doing my homework from my teachers and being a good role model for my brothers and cousins because I'm the oldest from my parents and family. Those are just a little of expectations my peers, family, and teachers have set for me.
Although it seems like I really don't want to, I will try my hardest to do all of those things.
I completly agree with Corinn. She makes some great points.
I think that the part about setting unachievable goals lowers self-esteem is a great topic to being up. :D I see were she is coming from on this point. I agree with her with the fact that it does depend on the person. Though, when you think about it, How do you know if you are a person who shouldn't set the high goals when you try? You don't till you try. I think everyone should set one high goal. If you don't have a great success with that goal, I think you should build up goals that keep getting higher and higher.
Lots of good points brought up here and we will certainly continue this discussion. As for Niki, probably best to preview your comments before they are published. As for Andy, I am sure he will have something to say about this!
I have expectations to become an engineer. It's something I wanted to since I was ten. I have always like make models and that kind of stuff. People around me expect me to do great things, but I don't know what those things are yet. They do say that I will be able to do whatever I want to do.
One of my expectations for my future is to do something great for the world, like find a cure for cancer or something. Some people aroun me who have expectations for my future would be my mom and dad. Their expectations would probably be for me to finish high school and get into a good college.
All right Jacob, here's my response, although why you had to dare me 3 times I don't know because there aren't that many other posts to comment on. First of all, shooting Michael Jackson has nothing to do with schoolwork unless you are studying to become a terrorist and I noticed that you never mentioned that as one of your expectations.
Although you made your point in a rather peculiar way, I understand where you are going, however perfection is possible as long as you believe it is. To use your example, there probably was probably someone named Michael Jackson who was black because it's not like its a very original name.
Perfection exists, if not in reality, as a concept. If you try to be perfect, you probably will get very close, but if you don't aim to be perfect, you admit its impossibility and make it unreachable, lowering your achievement level. Those who are able to accept defeat as victory will undoubtedly find more joy in life.
Well enough about Jacob's post, I think I've satisfied his dare. I would like to point out one of Terrell's statements, "If that doesnt work out I would like to follow in my mothers footsteps and become a sports phsycologist." I think it's interesting that he was the only one of us to post a back-up plan. I think that's really amazing that you can accept that you may not be able to do what you dream of doing. Some people believe that having a back-up plan says you think you will fail, but in some ways, it makes you think that you can afford to take more risks because if your original plan doesn't work, there's always something else to do. And Jacob don't say I'm contradicting myself because having an alternative, as I just said, allows you to take more risks and can result in greater gain ie more success. And if you weren't planning on saying something about that, sorry for the accusation, but sometimes it seems like you go through my posts and pick out the tiniest flaws in my arguments so I thought I should cover my bases.
I'm going to wait until later to post a second time because I'm sure the rest of the class will find time out of their busy weekend schedules soon to comment and will put out some insights of their own, but if for some reason my computer won't connect to the internet (I have to use a laptop because my brother gave the computer a virus while trying to figure out how to hack my passwords.) this counts as two responses since I responded to two different posts, but hopefully I can get back on so Jacob feel free to comment and Andy most likely won't even read our posts if he does decide to post so there really isn't much point in trying to make fun of him.
a couple of my expectations for my future is to get accepted by a good college like UD or Miami or something like that and go into most likely a career that has to do with medicine, like a physician. Or a businessman and work my way up to a big name like CEO or owner of a small buisness owner. -Tommy
An expectation I have for the future is to keep my grades as high as possible and not slack off, which has happened in the past. I also want to get into a higher orchestra next year, and hopefully get a lot of playing time during football this upcoming season.
An expectation that people around me have, is again to get good grades, and sail through school with no trouble at all.
ughh, why do you over achievers have to post a massive comment that is going to make my comment look pitiful? anyways..
I have many expectations for my future, some of which i'm sure will change throughout my highschool years. One thing i've always been set on though, is my college education. I am hoping to attend Juilliard school of preforming arts in New York. I'd like to attend and major in the vocal and possibly orchestral studies. I've accepted that this may be a far-fetched expectation but i have a lot of support. Especially from my mom who has always supported me and has high expectations for me as well. But theres always those people who have different ideas of what is "best for you" such as my Grandma is who a a little old fashion and believes i should marry rich and say heck with college ( i've cleaned up the language a bit hah)
Those are the expectation I have for myself, and the expectations that some other people have for me.
First off, right now the only black Michael Jacksons in the world right now are probably old geezers, because I don't think anyone wants to shame their child by naming him that, especially if they're black. The dad would be like, "Ain't no way way that we're going to name our kid after that skinny white boy!" That's the censored version. Oh and anyone who wants to call me racist, that's not true. I love everyone, well, not Andy, but everyone else.
Also, Corinn, in my observation of girls who aim for perfection, don't turn out very well. You've got all those girls that think they're perfect and better than everyone else, (guys do it too), but they really are just the same as all of us. And when the girls, or pretty boys, are trying to make their hair perfect, they go through all of this stress and spend so much time, only to have their hair stick up in random places. Now you're going to say I'm sexist, but I'm not, because I included guys in there, but I seem to see it more often in girls.
Okay, now that I may have been called some names in the previous writing, I would like to say that it was in fact good of Terrell to have stated a back up plan. However, Corinn, people may have back up plans, but don't want to waste space on the blog.
Also, Corinn, when you said, "there's always something else to do," I assume you were thinking of janitor or sitting on the curb with a sign that says "Give me a hamburger please!" And to this you would probably respond, "Well yes Jacob, I suppose a Janitor is always a possibility, but I think we can all do better than that."
Yes Corinn, I did just do that annoying thing you do when you try to guess what someone is going to comment on.
By the way, that second rip was a mispost. I almost forgot the part about who has expectations for me.
My grandpa expects me to exceed at the trombone and golf, my parents expect me to get straight As, my sister expects me to shut up (hah! I would never!), and my teachers expect me to understand their assignments. There, I have now satisfied the great expectation question.
I have some expectations of my own. They would include going to colledge, because i want to ba an actor and move to cali. " california dreamin " I also expect, (as well as my mom ) to do well i school and get good grades because that just my job as a kid.
Thats my small tid bit and by the way jacob what kinda picture is that. And corin wow you need to write a book to get your long essays out of ya.
Well Jacob, I wouldn't have to guess what you would post if you didn't nitpick at every part of my posts; why don't you do the same with other people's?
And apparently I have no life because this is about the third time I've been on this site today and every time Jacob, who also apparently has no life, says something about my comment that makes me mad so then I post again and even though I try to make it short it ends up being a lot longer than I anticipate. I have a habit of writing more than I need to to make a point. By the way Jacob, people name their kids strange names all the time so I wouldn't be surprised if there were several Michael Jacksons, and has it ever occurred to you that there might possibly be some people, definitely not me, who actually like Michael Jackson's music and think it an honor for their child to bear the same name? I can think of a few.
Also I would like to point out that all of your examples totally had nothing to do with people's expectations because I'm pretty sure that very few people really expect themselves to shoot Michael Jackson (although they may joke that they do) and that most girls don't expect themselves to spend hours on their hair, they just do.
And is reh Rachel because those could be her initials? Well I guess I'll see you all tomorrow because now I've fulfilled my two responses. And Jacob, if you read this you may want to change your picture.
I'd say that my expections for the future as of right now are strictly short term. I expect to do well in school, and to go to college after high school. I'm basically just expecting a good future.
People expect things of me that I've already shown I can do. For example, doing well in school. My parents and my teachers are always expecting me to do well. I'm also expected to do chores (no matter how much I don't want to) and just keep up with things around the house.
I agree with Niki. She basically described the expectations people have for most people our age.
Oh and I think that Jacob and Corrin are going a little overboard on commenting. I didn't read anything because they're all like at least five paragraphs long. I just counted, and aside from the responses that have one sentence, they've written 35 paragraphs all together. Just thought you'd want to know.
I have lots of expectations for my future, for high school, for collage, and for my life after school. My expectations for high school are mainly academic. I want to get good grades obviously, but I also want to do the IB degree and actually succeed in doing it. I also want to become a member of NHS and USB as the spirit advisor. Some none academic expectations would be to make Varsity Football Cheerleading. I also want to become a better winterguard member and advance to weaponary. My expectations for college aren't as specific as they are for high school. Probably because it all depends on how well i do in high school. My biggest expectation is to get in to Oxford, its my favorite university, for more than one reason hehehe. I'll only apply for that school though if I decide I want to become a psychologist. My other expectation would be to get into a good school of information technology and computer science. I'll only try to achieve this goal though if I want to become a computer programer. My expectations for life after school are simple and probably slightly cliche. I want to get a good job, that pays well, live comfortably, and marry the person I fall in love with. There aren't very many people who have expectations for me. Mainly my aunt Chong, my grandmother, mother, and my great uncle Charles. My aunt wants me to staty focused with school and get in to an ivy league school or some place equal to ivy league. My mother expects me to have my life mapped out before my junior year and grandmother just wants me to be ambitious and not settle for what I have if I can be better. My uncle, well he wants me to do well in school and go to collage and get a degree in something thats good. ~Sammy~
wow corrine thats a really long post lol anyways, i think your right about the motivation and setting impossibly high expectations. Yeah, in a way you are setting yourself up for dissapointment, but your also setting yourself up for extraordinary accomplishments I also agree with that poster in the Mrs. Hennessy's classroom. The moons amazing but stars are pretty fun too. ~Sammy~
Frankly, I disagree with Corinn about the "Shoot for the moon" poster.
I think the more appropriate saying would be "Shoot for the moon, the worst that can happen is you'll end up floating eternally in the vast and endless vacuum of space."
It seems to me that EVERYONE plans to have a good future, I mean, who aspires to be a bum?
Plus, since I never got to post this when I was actually supposed to be, here is my idea for calling someone an idiot in such weird terms that no one would get it. (blame Mrs. Hennessy, she dared me to do it on Friday)
"The folly of that statement was of herculean proportions."
Thank you, this has been a moment of nerd-dom with Mary Kate.
I just want to say that corinn's comments are the only person's comment that I like to talk about because she spends more time writing stuff that I may be able to comment on. Everyone else keeps it short and sweet, which is better for IM not blogging. Sorry guys.
Oh and Mary Kate, I liked what you said about that poster in Mrs. H's room how "the worst that can happen is you'll end up floating eternally in the vast and endless vacuum of space." Very true, very true. And Mrs. H, I'm going to get a picture that represents my childhood enjoyment.
My expectations for my future are both big and small. I want to do it all. I want to get the best grades, do the extra curriculars, and still have fun. I want to make the most of my life, and do what I love. I want to see the world, I want to have all the life experiences, like kids, and a great job. My expectations for life are scattered and many, but they're mine.
I think my parents have some pretty big expectation of me, too. They want me to be successful and they want me to have all that I can have, and to live my live to the full. I want that too, butt they have some bigger expectations also. They want me to go to an Ivy League School for college, and to be Valedictorian, and to be an amazing violinist, and all of that stuff is great, but I'm not sure if that's what i want for myself.
Wow. Some of you guys must REALLY like the sound of your own voice... or keyboard...
Anyway, while you guys were posting excruciatingly long blogs (sorry, I didn't actually read all of them) I, uh, well I kinda forgot to post... but I did today!!! And while I was reading these, I have to admit that sometimes I was thinking to myself, "Do these people have a life outside of english class, or do they just type really fast?!?!" I for one am a slow typer and realized that another expectation that I have for myself is to actually learn how to use technology. That might come in handy someday! I must agree with Corinn, in setting unachievable goals. Even though we won't get the top score or the best review, we have tried our absolute best to reach the goal we have set. And I have to say, Mary Kate, that I laughed really hard at a lot of what you said. You seem to have a way with words that most people wish they had... well, at least I do. I also might suggest to all you people against shooting for the moon, try being the first person to land on Mars!
Wow. Trying to keep up with all these comments is tough so im just gonna answer the questions...
I kinda feel the same way as Alyson. I don't really have future plans as far as what i wanna do with the rest of my life. But i do have high expectations for myself like graduating with a high gpa and overall good grades and 4 successful years in highschool. Then attend OSU like i've always wanted to. I also would love to be a varsity field hockey player and a decent track runner.
Many people expect things from me. Mostly my parents. They expect me to get good grades and stick with what i start. My teachers expect me to do well in there class. My coaches expect hard work and dedication. I do my best to meet everyones expectations for me.
So, one of my expectations for myself in the future is to go to FAU and major in science and math. I know I want to do something that has to do with those two field but I'm not quite sure what yet. Also one of the expectations that my parents have for me is to keep my grades up and get into a good college. Another expectation I have of myself is to actually finish Great Expectations without dyning over the boredome of it!! :]
hey wow this is like the best thing that has ever happened to me. I FINALLY GET TO POST. Expectations that i have of the future for myself are just to lead a successful life and stay out of trouble. I just want to live life to its fullest and not do anything stupid with it. I really dont think that anybody around me has any expectations for me expect maybe my parents and their expectations are most likely just going to be for me to be happy. They would say something like "if im happy then they will be happy" Those are really the only expectations

Alex, Is the Air Force something you are aiming for or is this something your father wants, but you aren't sure yet?

Sorry I just realized how long that really was.
By the way has anybody else noticed that Mary Kate is always the first one to post? I wonder if its all part of her plan to make the top ten...

I'll bet Andy will either completely forget about this or barely remember it on Sunday night.
just testing something
It worked! Hey everybody, look at my weird picture! Tell me what you see!
I see were she is coming from on this point.
Sorry for all the spelling mistakes! I just realized Alex and me are going into the same field! Well, we are going to try!
Jacob- you are one funny kid.
I'm awaiting Andy's reply to this blog. It should be quit the interesting one.
Does anyone else think we pick on him way too much?
This is Niki Israel, if you didn't notice.
No we dont pick on andy too much! We pick on him just enough.
Corrin i think you should write a book with big words and just give it to Andy lol!!
Jacob, signing off.
CONVERSATION BETWEEN JACOB AND CORRIN
R.I.P.
R.I.P.
I know how just about everyone is putting to have good grades and school stuff, but isn't just a given. If not what is the reason to go to school.
For the second time tonight, Jacob, signing off.
By the way, who on God's green earth is reh?
Jacob, for the third time, signing off.
And who is reh!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
hi mrs. h
It is Rachel.
-Alyson-
I agree with Niki.
Yeah, in a way you are setting yourself up for dissapointment, but your also setting yourself up for extraordinary accomplishments
I also agree with that poster in the Mrs.
Please, I know what you are thinking, and I am here to spoil your joke.
Yes, "every moment of Mary Kate is in nerdy". Ha Ha.
Jacob, signing off.
Kati
Kati
By the way, as you probably already noticed from those removed posts, I really should learn how to use a computer properly...
Kati
Sorry it took me so long to post Mrs.H. :)
